The Student Research Journal is proud to introduce its editorial team for 2024-25. Led by Editor-In-Chief Odin Halvorson, this is the largest editorial team the student-run journal has had since its inception at San José State University in 2011.

Leadership Team

Odin Halvorson, Editor-In-Chief

Odin HalvorsonAfter completing his MFA in creative writing, Odin Halvorson got a taste for academic work through presenting his work at the International Conference of the Fantastic in the Arts. Halvorson is, among many other things, a published science fiction author, husband, and co-founder of Round Table Writers. He has previously worked with the Duende literary magazine, the Stonecoast Review, and the Everylibrary Institute, and he serves as an advisory board member to the Democracy Café alongside luminaries like Dr. Christopher Phillips, Dr. Lawrence Lessig, and Dr. Cornel West.

Besides his work with the Student Research Journal, Halvorson also serves the public as a library specialist, while pursuing his studies through the Master of Library and Information Science program at San José State University. He and his wife have also founded The Unenlightened Generalists, where they highlight how a life of art, play, ritual, and learning can change the world.

Marc Hoffeditz, Managing Editor

Marc HoffeditzMarc Hoffeditz is a library professional living and working in the Greater Boston area. His current areas of interest are copyright, scholarly communications, and resource sharing. After eight years in the Access Services department of the Ginn Library at Tufts University, Hoffeditz joined the Boston Library Consortium as its inaugural resource sharing program manager in the fall of 2023. Hoffeditz is an active board member of Community Cooks, a non-profit in the Greater Boston area that mobilizes teams of volunteer cooks to provide meals to various human service organizations. In his free time, Hoffeditz enjoys baking gluten free treats, replaying nostalgic video games from his teenage years, and taking care of his two houseplants Nadja and Steve.

Erica Enos, Communications Coordinator

Erica EnosErica Enos is a first-generation graduate student living and working in Southern California. She has a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from Cal Poly Pomona and has spent her career working in public relations in the video game industry while always dreaming of being a librarian. She is looking forward to transitioning into a new career in library and information science and is especially excited to learn about video game preservation. Enos enjoys cozy games, fantasy novels, home decor, and her corgi, Bella.

Content Editors

Pearl Kim, Content & Copy Editor

Pearl KimPearl Kim is a graduate student in the Master of Library and Information Science program at the San José State University. Previously, she worked as a writer creating and editing content that made technology management clear for public servants. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism with a minor in Asian American Studies at Northwestern University. In her free time, she reads, thrifts, looks at the ocean and eats good food that other people cook. She lives in Long Beach, California with her husband and two cats.

Myles Cunningham, Content Editor

Myles CunninghamMyles Cunningham is earning his Master of Library and Information Science degree from the San José State University while living in Washington State. Prior to enrolling in the fully online MLIS program at San José State, he obtained an MA in Philosophy and a BA in Geography and Political Science, both from the University of Oregon. His interests span the humanities and also include geospatial librarianship, data science, and public policy. Beginning in fall 2024, Cunningham will work with the California State Library to initiate the California Libraries AI Coalition. In addition to his educational pursuits, he works in public services at his local public library system and enjoys outdoor sports, especially mountain biking.

Alysia Gilman, Content Editor

Alysia GilmanAlysia Gilman is a current student enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program at San José State University. She comes from a background in psychology, having completed a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of La Verne. Currently, Gilman works as a library associate at her local public library in Southern California. In her free time, she enjoys painting, baking, knitting, and spending time with her two cats.

Annie Johnson, Content Editor

Annie JohnsonAnnie Johnson is currently pursuing her Master of Library and Information Science degree from San José State University. In 2023, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Santa Clara University with a concentration in professional writing. Johnson has worked on multiple college publications and as a writing tutor to support university students in their written assignments. She currently works as a library aide at a Bay Area public library with aspirations to pursue a career in youth services. With an educational background in English and extensive work experience in editing and instruction, Johnson is enthusiastic about the opportunity to hone her editing skills with the Student Research Journal. In her free time, she enjoys reading, going to the movie theater, and spending time at the beach. Johnson expects to graduate from SJSU in spring 2025 and is excited to work with SRJ for her final semesters in graduate school.

Kristin Voris, Content Editor

Kristin VorisKristin Voris is a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program at San José State University. Previously, she worked in the technology industry in the big data space as an engineering program manager. Voris received a Bachelor’s of Liberal Arts degree from Willamette University, double majoring in English and Communications. While working in technology, she fulfilled the communications role for her department and produced its newsletter. Voris is an active board member of her Daughters of the American Revolution chapter. In her free time, she cooks, gardens, travels, enjoys nature photography, and spends time with her extended family. She lives in San José, California.

Paige Wallace, Content Editor

Paige WallacePaige Wallace is a current graduate student enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program at San José State University. Previously, she has worked in human resources, creating hiring exams for local and state agencies, and has also owned a freelance proofreading company. She has a Master’s degree in English Literature from California State University, Sacramento, and a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Massachusetts State University, Fitchburg. She lives in El Dorado Hills, California, with her partner, three kids (all of whom are under 10), and multiple pets. She enjoys coffee, traveling whenever possible, and listening to audiobooks while cooking and baking.

Danielle Willett, Content Editor

Danielle WillettDanielle Willett earned her Bachelor of Science in English from Central Michigan University in 2014. With a background in academic and fiction editing and a strong love of books, she has utilized those skills throughout her professional career in libraries. In her spare time, she enjoys reading romance novels, hanging out with her nieces and nephew, and attempting to crochet. Willett expects to graduate from San José State University with her Master of Library and Information Science degree in spring 2025. She currently lives in Michigan and works at a public library as an associate librarian.

Copy Editors

Ava Jones, Copy Editor

Ava JonesAva Jones is in her third year of the Master of Library and Information Science program at San José State University. She is aiming to graduate with her MLIS degree in December 2024. Before pursuing her master’s degree, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from University of California Santa Cruz. She has had a passion for editing since she was a child. Outside of school, she loves to read, garden, and bake. She currently lives in Southern California.

Vanessa Sztym, Copy Editor

Vanessa SztymVanessa Sztym earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Alberta, and a Library and Information Technology Diploma from MacEwan University. She has been working as a library paraprofessional for more than 10 years and currently works as a cataloguing technician in a special library. She is passionate about metadata and updating problematic subject headings used within the library and information Science field. Sztym is currently pursuing her Master of Library and Information Science degree at San José State University and expects to graduate in spring 2026. Sztym currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In her free time, she enjoys knitting, lacemaking, and cross stitch.

About the Student Research Journal

The Student Research Journal promotes graduate and professional research in the library and information science field and asks crucial questions on current and emerging professional issues from a local, national and global perspective. By advocating for the value of research to further intellectual inquiry and innovation in our field, SRJ contributes critical insights to inform everyday professional practice in the field and specifically cultivates robust graduate student research through a rigorous peer review process. As San José State University’s only fully student-run, double-blind peer-reviewed, open access research journal, SRJ leads the way for the university; the College of Information, Data, and Society; the School of Information; and LIS graduate research.

Read the latest issue here. Volume 14, Issue 1 focuses on artificial intelligence and women’s involvement in print in 20th-century America and features a contribution from SJSU Assistant Professor Souvick Ghosh and SJSU alum Denise McCoy, a book review by Madelaine Russell, and an editorial by SRJ Managing Editor Marc Hoffeditz. The SRJ is hard at work on its next issue, Volume 14, Issue 2, which will release later this year.

Call for Submissions

SRJ invites original research, book reviews, and evidence summaries from graduate students at any university on topics in the fields of librarianship and information science and archives and records management and related theory, policy, ethics, application, case studies and professional practice. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and undergo rigorous peer review.
