February is considered “Information Governance Month” because the third Thursday of February is designated as “Global Information Governance Day” (GIGD), which aims to raise awareness about the importance of information governance practices across organizations.

To celebrate Information Governance Month (AKA “Records and Information Management Month”), you can: launch internal awareness campaigns, conduct training sessions on best practices, share educational resources, highlight success stories, recognize employees for exemplary information management, and engage with external stakeholders by participating in industry events or sharing relevant content on social media; all while emphasizing the importance of data security, compliance, and efficient information access within your organization.

Key points about Information Governance Month:

Focus on awareness:

The primary goal of this month is to highlight the significance of managing information effectively, including data privacy, access controls, retention policies, and compliance issues.

Global Information Governance Day:

This specific day falls on the third Thursday of February and is when most activities related to information governance awareness are concentrated.

Who coordinates it:

The American Health Information Management Association is often cited as a key coordinator for promoting Information Governance Month.
