SJSU SLIS Faculty Share Expertise During ALISE 2013 Conference

News

Seattle is the place to be for library and information science educators later this month, and the faculty at the San José State University School of Library and Information Science are no exception.

If you will be attending the ALISE 2013 Conference, you’ll want to get there in time to catch the WISE Pedagogy Pre-conference Workshop, scheduled for January 22 at 10 a.m. Dr. Michael Stephens, an assistant professor at the San José State University School of Library and Information Science, who teaches courses on transformative learning for students in the School’s Master of Library and Information Science program, is one of the presenters leading the pre-conference workshop entitled, “Inquiry Across Time and Space.”

Dr. Stephens is also one of the presenters for Friday’s session about distance education. The session, “Beautiful Connections: Questions in Distance Education,” is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on January 25.

In addition, SJSU SLIS associate professor Dr. Anthony Bernier will lead a juried panel about working with remote students in research apprenticeships. Joining him for the panel discussion are SLIS faculty members Dr. Jeremy Kemp and Dr. Kristen Rebmann. The juried panel is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23. Drs. Bernier, Kemp, and Rebmann are active in the School’s Center for Information Research and Innovation (CIRI), and supervise several student research assistants.

On Wednesday afternoon, Dr. Sandra Hirsh, director and professor at the SJSU School of Library and Information Science, will sit on a juried panel about the e-portfolio as a capstone experience. Graduate students at SJSU SLIS can choose either the e-portfolio or a thesis for their culminating experience. Dr. Hirsh will speak directly about the e-portfolio course at SJSU SLIS and how it ensures that each SLIS student has mastered the core competencies for the Master of Library and Information Science degree before graduation. The session is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Dr. Hirsh will also be hosting a networking reception at the conference. All ALISE attendees are invited to the Hyatt at Olive 8 for complimentary refreshments. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues and exchange ideas for innovative teaching. No RSVP necessary. Details follow:
