Aaisha Haykal is currently the Manager of Archival Services at the College of Charleston’s Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture in Charleston, SC. She is responsible for collection development, public programming, instruction, reference, and administrative duties in this position. Haykal has been the Co-PI on digitization and oral history grants totaling approximately $2.1 million, increasing access to historical materials and supporting new archival professionals. She has been involved in several associations, including the Society of American Archivists (SAA). She serves as the Vice President for Programs for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). She previously served on the Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) board in Chicago, IL and the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board (ISHRAB). Her research interests include African American history, digital preservation, censorship, and community archiving. She has co-authored several articles and book chapters on the importance of African American archives, archival outreach, and diversity and inclusion in the information profession. She conducts workshops on preserving family histories, community archiving, and memory work.  Haykal has B.A. degrees in English and Textual Studies and African American Studies from Syracuse University and a Masters of Science in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
