How to Calculate Last 60 Semester/90 Quarter Unit Admisssions GPA

Post

Please follow these instructions for calculating your last 60 semester / 90 quarter units in order to determine your admissions GPA. The following is offered as guidance. Only SJSU GAPE will make the official calculation upon application to the university. SJSU iSchool applicants who need assistance estimating their last 60 semester / 90 quarter unit GPA may use this optional estimator.

Only academic course work from regionally accredited colleges/universities is included in GPA calculations. The transcript will note both accreditation and academic/professional development/continuing education course work. This can typically be found on the back of the transcript.

Step 1: Start with your most recent work and count back 60 semester/90 quarter units. If the 60th semester/90th quarter unit falls in the middle of the semester, the whole semester is included in the GPA calculation. Please note that when counting the last 60 semester / 90 quarter units, do not split semesters. For example, when counting backward and you arrive at 58 units, you will count all of the units for entire next semester even if it goes over the 60 semester / 90 quarter units.

Step 2: Count your graded units (A, B, etc.) and your credit units (CR, S) back through the last 60 semester/90 quarter units.

Step 3: Add your total grade points for the last 60 semester/90 quarter units as listed on the transcript.

Step 4: Divide your total grade points by the total of graded units from Step 2. You now have your last 60 semester/90 quarter GPA.

Examples

Step 1

First transcript (Spring 2011) – overall 14 quarter units.
Second transcript (Fall 2007) – overall 12 semester units [12*1.5=18 quarter units].
Third transcript (Spring 2008- Summer 2006) – overall 40 semester units [40*1.5 = 60 quarter units]

Overall total – 14 + 12 + 40 = 92 quarter units

Note: If you start with quarter units from the first transcript and then in the next transcript you have semester units, you must convert the semester units to quarter units to have an accurate calculation, and vice versa. When converting quarter into semester units, take your total and multiply by .667. When converting semester units into quarter units, take your total and multiply by 1.5.

Step 2

First transcript – 14 graded units; 0 credit units
Second transcript – 18 graded units; 0 credit units
Third transcript – 60 graded units; 0 credit units

Overall total units – 92 graded units; 0 credit units

Step 3

First transcript – 14 graded units; 0 credit units; 51 grade points
Second transcript – 18 graded units; 0 credit units; 60 grade points
Third transcript – 60 graded units; 0 credit units; 151 grade points

Note: If you need to convert grade points from semester to quarter or quarter to semester, you must multiply the grade points appropriately.

Step 4

First transcript – 14 graded units; 0 credit units; 51 grade points
Second transcript – 18 graded units; 0 credit units; 60 grade points
Third transcript – 60 graded units; 0 credit units; 151 grade points

Overall total  = 92 graded units; 0 credit units; 262 grade points

GPA = 262 grade points/92 graded units = 2.84 GPA
