Book Review: Hopeful Visions, Practical Actions

Book Review: Hopeful Visions, Practical Actions: This review examines Hopeful Visions, Practical Actions: Cultural Humility in Library Work, an edited collection by Sarah R. Kostelecky, Lori Townsend, and David A. Hurley that explores how information professionals can practice cultural humility to create more equitable and inclusive library environments. The review situates cultural humility within broader LIS conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion, positioning it as an alternative to cultural competence. It highlights the collection’s strengths, particularly the authenticity of the contributors’ voices and the range of library settings and practices represented. The review also identifies limitations, including the collection’s reliance on personal narrative rather than practical guidance for navigating the challenges of cultural humility. Overall, the review recommends the volume as a way for library professionals at any career stage to engage with ideas for cultivating welcoming, empathetic library spaces.

Gina Mik is a graduating Master of Library and Information Science student at San José State University’s iSchool. A former middle school English teacher, her commitment to literacy and learning led her to libraries first as a volunteer and ultimately as a second career. At the iSchool, Gina combined coursework in academic librarianship and instruction with hands-on experience in children’s services at Castro Valley Library and reference and instruction work at Laney College Library. She also served as team leader and teaching assistant for a special studies project providing open-access professional development for school librarians in Kenya. Her interests bring together literacy, instruction, global librarianship, and equitable library services. Following graduation, Gina hopes to continue supporting library professionals in Kenya while pursuing a career centered on instruction and creating welcoming spaces where all learners can thrive.
