Critically Examining ChatGPT, Google’s Hybrid AI Search, and DuckDuckGo
Kevin Mockrin, 2024 Showcase
Critically Examining ChatGPT, Google’s Hybrid AI Search, and DuckDuckGo: The assignment was to critically examining a GenAI Tool, a Hybrid Search Engine with AI capabilities, and a traditional Search Engine to reflect on the differences between the findings of these three tools, the accuracy of information and cited resources identified by these three tools, and the relative merits of each of these tools for reference librarians assisting a patron on a chosen topic. I chose ChatGPT, Google, and DuckDuckGo. I engaged with these tools, researching the complete history of tap dancing as my reference topic, as if the library patron were quickly looking for quality information on the subject at a public library, outside of books and not so deep it has to be peer-reviewed. The paper displays my frustrating difficulties, successes, and ultimate conclusions as to which of these tools would work best as a research tool on a library reference desk.
Kevin Mockrin: Originally from Chicago (go Cubs!), my family moved out to the Los Angeles area when I was nine. I also lived in NYC for undergrad, earning a Communication Studies Degree at NYU, and I have been back in Los Angeles (specifically Burbank now) for over 20 years.
I worked in the Entertainment Industry for close to three decades as a Performer, Casting Director, and Educator. I also earned a Masters in Teaching at Pepperdine University and taught Theater Arts to elementary and middle school students through a non profit organization.
As a final career change, desiring stability rather than freelance or assignment work, I am excited to focus on Youth Services and merge all my experiences to become a Children’s Librarian. I currently work part time as a YS Library Assistant at the Burbank Public Library.
