Evaluating AI Tools for Use in Toronto Public Library: This discussion post explores the considerations that need to be taken when selecting between a locally hosted AI model and a cloud-based AI model for implementing an AI-powered staff chatbot at Toronto Public Library (TPL). The chatbot would be used to navigate committee records, library policies, and IT support documentation. The two AI deployment models were evaluated across six criteria: ease of implementation, maintenance, data privacy and security, customization, technical expertise, and cost. The analysis concludes that while a cloud-based model would offer ease and speed of implementation, a local model would provide greater control and privacy. It concludes with a strong emphasis on the need to understand the biases and limitations of the AI model before it gets implemented to ensure consistency with the institution’s values and mission.

She has worked various roles at the Toronto Public Library since 2014, currently holding the Digital Products Specialist position in the Information Technology and Services (ITS) department. Nishtha aims to become a Senior Service Specialist, with a focus on older adults and seniors, at the Toronto Public Library after receiving her MLIS degree. Her interest in programming for seniors stems from seeing immigrant seniors in her community that are socially isolated due to English not being their first language.
