The Making of a Lady Librarian: Katharine L. Sharp and Her Lasting Legacy on Professional Librarianship

The Making of a Lady Librarian: Katharine L. Sharp and Her Lasting Legacy on Professional Librarianship: This research paper examines the role of Katharine L. Sharp in shaping the professionalization of librarianship in the United States. Drawing on archival and scholarly sources, it traces Sharp’s education, early career under Melvil Dewey, and leadership in establishing one of the first influential library schools. The paper argues that Sharp was instrumental in standardizing library education and advancing graduate-level training, helping to define librarianship as a formal profession. It also explores her contributions to professional organizations and her unpublished work, A Catechism for Librarians, to demonstrate how her ideas about library management, professional engagement, and service remain relevant today. By situating Sharp within both her historical context and contemporary library practice, this study highlights her lasting impact on institutional development, professional standards, and the evolving role of librarians. Ultimately, Sharp’s legacy illustrates how early leadership continues to inform modern librarianship.
