San Jose State University uses Zoom web conferencing. Students and faculty can schedule and hold meetings at any time and create recordings.
Zoom IM is also available for both faculty and students. Students may contact other students or faculty members.
All classes have discussion forums. Most classes have mandatory group work and collaboration and mandatory posting to forums.
Student professional associations provide peer support and a variety of events:
American Library Association iSchool Student Chapter
Association for Information Science and Technology Student Chapter, San Jose State University
Society of American Archivists Student Chapter San Jose State University
Special Libraries Association Student Chapter
Standards 3 and 4 of the iSchool specify the expectations for faculty communications–both instructional and supportive–throughout a course. The Recorded Content Policy requires faculty to regularly record material for their classes. A text version of the content is also provided.
Faculty-student communication is stressed in the faculty training that is carried out through the initial training that all new faculty complete before they begin teaching.
Ongoing training is provided in the T3 series of online faculty workshops and at other training events. The content is made available to all faculty members via the Canvas Learning Management System. Feedback is obtained and used to inform future training sessions.
Peer review of classes ensures ongoing observation and feedback regarding faculty-student communication conducted through the LMS.
Each student can communicate with their instructors via email and the Canvas course site. Students can contact faculty pathway advisors for advice.
All students have access to the Graduate Advisor who oversees the advising process and answers questions and deals with complaints. She also talks with prospective students.
In direct support of students:
- The Graduate Advisor maintains a curriculum blog and answers questions posted there.
- The School’s Student Services Team provides ongoing support for students answering questions and solving problems.
- The iSchools’s Online Student Advisor is also in direct contact with students and maintains a very comprehensive advising site on the Canvas LMS to which all students are joined.
- The iSchool blog for both current and prospective students
- The iSchool Facebook site
