Varanasi’s Hidden Histories Get a Second Life Through Preservation Partnership

In the ancient city of Varanasi, history is etched into every street, structure, and—soon—every document. The Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) has announced a new collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to conserve over seven decades’ worth of archival materials, including documents and maps dating back to 1950.

This initiative comes at a crucial time, as humidity, pests, and general neglect have taken their toll on fragile paper records. Through this partnership, INTACH will introduce Integrated Pest Management, staff training, and preservation protocols designed to safeguard these valuable records for future researchers, planners, and historians.

These maps and documents are more than administrative tools—they are a blueprint of the city’s post-independence growth and transformation. By restoring and organizing these records, VDA is not only preserving paper but protecting cultural memory. It’s a move that recognizes the power of archives to inform development while honoring the past.

The project is set to begin soon, with VDA leadership expressing long-term commitment to archive maintenance and accessibility.
