San José State University’s iSchool boasts an impressive set of programs, including the Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA). Led by Dr. Pat Franks, MARA just celebrated its 10-year anniversary. I recently had the opportunity to attend a virtual open house about MARA and some highlights about this innovative program are below.
SJSU Alumna Wins ALA’s I Love My Librarian Award for Outstanding Contributions to Public Librarianship
Congratulations to Maria Papanastassiou!
San José State University alumna Maria Papanastassiou, who completed her Master of Library and Information Science degree in 2013, is the latest SJSU Spartan to win the I Love My Librarian Award, conferred annually by the American Library Association. The Kids’ World Assistant Manager at Arlington Heights (Ill.) Memorial Library, Papanastassiou was one of 10 winners announced on December 10, 2019, which included three academic, three public, and four school librarians.
Blockchain Explores Groundbreaking Technology Use in Libraries

MLIS Student’s Essay Wins Scholarship and Trip to Association of Research Libraries Fall Forum
Choosing between an essay or a visual submission when considering her application format for the 2019 Julia C. Blixrud Scholarship, Madelynn Dickerson decided to write an essay. Her decision proved successful in exhibiting evidence of her creative thinking and passion for research libraries. The San José State University School of Information graduate student received the $1,000 scholarship and was invited to attend the Association of Research Libraries Fall Forum, themed “Research Libraries as Catalytic Leaders in a Society in Constant Flux.”

InfoCon 2019 was held in Nashville, Tennessee from October 21-23. Registrants were able to attend workshops, lectures, and vendor booths while discovering new & best practices, experimenting with technology and gaining valuable experience.

Tribal Connectivity via TV Whitespace

In 2014, the Association of Tribal Archives, Museums and Libraries prepared a report, Digital Inclusion in Native Communities: The Role of Tribal Libraries, which discusses the challenges Tribal Libraries face in bringing basic broadband access to their citizens in addition to creating public spaces that provide Wi-Fi connections. The report illustrates how Tribal Libraries play a critical role as community anchor institutions (CAIs) in providing their community members with access to the internet (ATALM, 2014).

Internships are central to a well-rounded student experience in San José State University iSchool’s many programs. Because of the nature of an online program, internships are a key aspect of gaining important contacts in a student’s chosen field. This is so important, in fact, that all successful graduates of the Master of Archives and Records Administration program complete an internship or an equivalent. Laura Froelke, MARA student set to graduate spring 2020, recently completed an internship at the Oregon State Archives, leading to influential and exciting career opportunities.
