History and Accreditation
The first Library Science course was taught at San José State University in 1928, and the School of Information first started offering a graduate degree in Library Science in 1954.
The Master’s degree in Library and Information Science program has been continuously accredited by the American Library Association since 1969.
In 2008, our school introduced a second graduate degree, the Master of Archives and Records Administration, and in 2012, we started offering a Post-Master’s Certificate in Library and Information Science program. An MS in Informatics was added in 2019, and the school’s first-ever bachelor’s degree program was created in 2020.
In addition to ALA accreditation of the MLIS program, San José State University is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).

MLIS Program Accreditation
The Master of Library and Information Science program at the San José State University School of Information is accredited by the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation, with the status of Continued accreditation. The next comprehensive review visit is scheduled for spring 2029. The MLIS program has been continuously accredited by ALA since 1969.
