MLIS Program Accreditation

The Master of Library and Information Science program at the San José State University School of Information is accredited by the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation, with the status of Continued accreditation. The next comprehensive review visit is scheduled for spring 2022. The MLIS program has been continuously accredited by ALA since 1969.

The most recent review of the MLIS program by ALA took place in 2014. The comprehensive evaluation of the MLIS program included review of our school’s Program Presentation by an External Review Panel, as well as a site visit by the ERP to the SJSU campus to meet with faculty, staff, and program administrators. The ERP included practitioners and academics, who verified that the MLIS program meets ALA’s Standards for Accreditation.

As part of the 2014 reaccreditation process, our school submitted a Program Presentation to the ALA Office of Accreditation in January 2014, in preparation for a March 2014 site visit by the ERP. The report is available here: 2014 Program Presentation [PDF: 265 pages; 2.61 MB].

The ERP shared the results of their review in the March 2014 External Review Panel Report.

In June 2014, the ALA Committee on Accreditation made the decision to grant reaccreditation to our school’s MLIS program for the maximum possible term of seven years. This has been extended to 8 years due to the pandemic.

Information regarding the MLIS program’s reaccreditation in 2007 is also available, including the school’s 2007 Program Presentation and the ERP report.
