New Scholarship Established for SJSU SLIS Students Interested in Special Libraries

Thanks to the generous contributions of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Silicon Valley Chapter, two students interested in special librarianship will be awarded scholarships this spring.

Thanks to the generous contributions of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Silicon Valley chapter, the School of Library and Information Science at San José State University (SJSU) will be able to offer scholarships specifically for students interested in a career in special libraries. The two scholarships, each for $1,000, will be awarded to Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program students who are members of the SLA Silicon Valley chapter.

According to Mihoko Hosoi, the current chapter president, the chapter is excited to be able to support students and partner with the school. The scholarships are intended to help “action-oriented and outward-focused students who are interested in taking on leadership roles at our chapter in the future,” said Hosoi.

She describes a multitude of ways students can get involved in the chapter: “Volunteer for officer positions, organize chapter networking events, publicize our chapter activities, edit web content, or participate in our programs.” She looks forward to hearing students’ ideas regarding how they might contribute to the chapter.

Hosoi, who received a scholarship while she attended graduate school, understands how helpful a monetary award can be for students. She also said that student, who are often full of fresh and innovative ideas are important members of the chapter. SLA Silicon Valley wants to support these forward-thinking students by assisting them financially.

The SJSU information school is currently accepting applications for all of its scholarships, including the two offered by SLA Silicon Valley. Each spring, scholarship awards are announced in April.

Students interested in applying for the new scholarships, or any of the existing scholarships, should check out the Scholarship, Award, and Grant Information page on the SJSU information school’s website, which details the requirements for each award. Applications for scholarships are accepted between March 1 and March 30.
