CIRCLE Project from SJSU Chosen as Mozilla Award Winner
Dr. Darra Hofman, Dr. Michele Villagran and Dr. Souvich Ghosh from the San José State University School of Information, as well as Dr. Nada Attar and Dr. Saugher Nojan, are among the 15 winners selected for Mozilla’s Responsible Computing Challenge.
Dr. Michele Villagran Honored for Leadership in Social Justice and Equality
Assistant Professor Michele Villagran is the recipient of the 2023 Herb Biblo Outstanding Leadership Award for Social Justice and Equality presented by The Social Responsibilities Round Table. The award recognizes individuals who are leaders and advocates for social justice and equality within the library profession. “Everything I do is for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice,” says Villagran.
iSchool Announces Program Coordinator for Bachelor’s Degree Hybrid Program
Dr. Dan Nathan-Roberts recently joined the San José State University School of Information’s faculty in a new capacity. In addition to his role as an associate professor, he will serve as the school’s program coordinator for the in-person/hybrid section of the Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Data Analytics degree, which is slated to begin in fall 2024.
Seven iSchool Students Awarded 2023 ALA Spectrum Scholarships
Seven students from the
San José State University School of Information have been
selected for the 2023 Spectrum Scholarship Program by the
American Library Association. The
scholarship recipients were chosen based on their “commitment
to community building, leadership potential, and planned
contributions to making social justice part of everybody’s
everyday work in LIS.”
New Beginnings for MARA Program this Fall
Two New Instructors to Teach New Courses
The fall 2023 semester at the San José State University School of Information officially starts August 17, and students will be greeted by a few new faces. Rae Lynn Haliday and Dr. Junia Papas are joining the faculty and bringing brand-new courses to the Master of Archives and Records Administration degree program.
Gateway PhD Post-Graduate Researcher Wins Coveted Award
Krista McCracken, a current member of the Gateway PhD program cohort, has been awarded a doctoral fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
iSchool Students, Alumni Receive California Library Association Awards and Scholarships
Several students and alumni from the San José State University School of Information have received awards and scholarships from the California Library Association. These individuals were honored this past June during the Gala event at the CLA Annual Conference.
Endowed Scholarships ‘Ease the Burden’ and Allow Students to Focus on Academics
This spring, 11 students enrolled in the master’s degree programs at the San José State University School of Information were awarded Endowed and Donated Scholarships from various donors and organizations.

Each spring, except in 2022, the San José State University School of Information recognizes its faculty and staff members with special awards for their achievements in several different areas. During the quarterly faculty retreat held in May, iSchool Director Anthony Chow announced the 2023 award recipients.
25th Issue of the Student Research Journal Explores Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Library and Information Science
The 25th issue of the fully student-run Student Research Journal is now available online. The issue, published in May 2023, features an invited contribution from the director of the San José State University School of Information, an editorial by the editor-in-chief and an editorial by the managing editor.
Faculty Selects MLIS Graduating Student for Top Honor
Max Gonzalez Burdick Named Ken Haycock Award Winner
Max Gonzalez Burdick, a graduating student in the Master of Library and Information Science program at the San José State University School of Information, has received the 2023 Ken Haycock Award and served as the iSchool’s student speaker during the May 19 virtual convocation. The Ken Haycock Award is given annually to an MLIS student who “exhibits the most exceptional professional promise for leadership.” Burdick was nominated for the prestigious award by the iSchool faculty and received $1,000 and a citation.
Graduating Students Honored with Director’s Awards for Excellence
Four graduating students of the San José State University School of Information’s Master of Library and Information Science degree program are starting their post-graduate school life with a new award on their résumés. Kristen Chua, Rachel Fleming, Devon Cahill, and Charlie Harmon have all received Director’s Awards for Excellence. These awards are given out to well-deserving students who are nominated or self-nominated for their academic or professional achievements.
