Several students and alumni from the San José State University
School of Information have received awards and scholarships from
the California Library Association. These individuals were
honored this past June during the Gala event at the CLA Annual
Conference.
This spring, 11 students enrolled in the master’s degree programs at the San José State University School of Information were awarded Endowed and Donated Scholarships from various donors and organizations.
Each spring, except in 2022, the San José State University School
of Information recognizes its faculty and staff members with
special awards for their achievements in several different areas.
During the quarterly faculty retreat held in May, iSchool
Director Anthony Chow announced the 2023 award recipients.
The 25th issue of the fully student-run Student Research Journal is now available online. The issue, published in May 2023, features an invited contribution from the director of the San José State University School of Information, an editorial by the editor-in-chief and an editorial by the managing editor.
Max Gonzalez Burdick, a graduating student in the Master of
Library and Information Science program at the San José State
University School of Information, has received the 2023 Ken
Haycock Award and served as the iSchool’s student speaker during
the May 19 virtual convocation. The Ken Haycock Award is given
annually to an MLIS student who “exhibits the most exceptional
professional promise for leadership.” Burdick was nominated for
the prestigious award by the iSchool faculty and received $1,000
and a citation.
Four graduating students of the San José State University School
of Information’s Master of Library and Information Science degree
program are starting their post-graduate school life with a new
award on their résumés. Kristen Chua, Rachel Fleming, Devon
Cahill, and Charlie Harmon have all received Director’s Awards
for Excellence. These awards are given out to well-deserving
students who are nominated or self-nominated for their academic
or professional achievements.
Keith Kesler, a graduate from the San José State University
School of Information, has been named a
2023 Mover and Shaker Community Builder by Library
Journal. Kesler was nominated for the award by his manager.
He considers it a “great honor…since there are only around 40
librarians selected for the honor each year, and it’s for all of
the libraries in the United States.”
Dr. Stephen Abrams is the 23rd individual to earn his PhD from Queensland University of Technology in Australia. The Gateway PhD program offered a doctorate through a partnership between the San José State University School of Information and Queensland University of Technology from 2008 to 2021.
The Aslib Journal of Information Management recently published a paper researched and written by Dr. Souvich Ghosh, assistant professor at the San José State University School of Information, in collaboration with Julie Gogoi and Kristen Chua, both graduate students at the school.
Adding to her impressive repertoire of teaching and service,
Associate Professor Joni Bodart recently accepted the editor role
of Young Adult Library Services, or YALS, the flagship
journal for youth services in the library field.
As the front line of student support for San José State University’s School of Information, the Student Services Team is consistently innovating to meet and anticipate the needs of its diverse population. To enhance its reach, the team has recently expanded in size and scope. The addition of two new staff members and increased engagement platforms has amplified access to the team’s services and resources.
