Dr. Timothy Dickey was awarded the 2022 RUSA Margaret E. Monroe Award for Library Adult Services. On winning the award, Dickey stated, “I am deeply humbled and tremendously honored by the award, which recognizes so many aspects of my professional life as a librarian, a faculty member, an author, and as someone dedicated to professional service.”

Dickey is currently a lecturer and teaches courses in the fully online Master of Library and Information Science program at the School of Information. He has been with San José State University since 2011, and brings more than a decade of service in information services, collection management, branch management, and caring mentorship throughout the research process to his courses. When not teaching, he works as an adult public service librarian at the Columbus, Ohio Metropolitan Libraries.

RUSA stands for Reference and User Services Association. As a part of the American Library Association, its focus is to “advance the evolution of the profession and better serve users in a continuously changing information society.” RUSA does outreach to all types of libraries to help with reference and user services. The Margaret E. Monroe Award for Library Adult Services is awarded to those that have made “significant contributions to library adult services.” These contributions are measured through factors such as achievements, publications, leadership and program creation.

In 2020, Dickey published his book, “Library Dementia Services: How to Meet the Needs of the Alzheimer Community.” His book was part of the reason for winning the award, as it was the first complete handbook for library professionals, according to RUSA’s article. “I am especially encouraged that the award is tied to my publications on library services for persons living with dementia, a growing but under-served population for information professionals, and for all of us living in an aging world,” said Dickey. The book is available through Emerald Press.
