Library professionals, employers, graduate students, and
educators gathered online at three Library 2.0 web conferences
during 2019. The conferences series, offered through a
partnership between Dr.
Choosing between an essay or a visual submission when considering
her application format for the 2019 Julia C. Blixrud Scholarship,
Madelynn Dickerson decided to write an essay. Her decision proved
successful in exhibiting evidence of her creative thinking and
passion for research libraries. The San José State University
School of Information graduate student received the $1,000
scholarship and was invited to attend the Association of Research
Libraries Fall Forum, themed “Research Libraries as Catalytic
Leaders in a Society in Constant Flux.”
Highlighting a rigorous debate in YA
librarianship, the newly published second edition of Transforming Young Adult Services incorporates
recent developments in critical youth studies by
Anthony Bernier, author, editor and professor at San José
State University’s School of Information.
The heart shape embodies the many works of Michael Stephens,
associate professor in the School of Information at San José
State University. Stephens has published a collection of columns,
blog posts, and essays that celebrates compassion and empathy,
teaches ways to develop and empower kindness, and encourages
curiosity and creativity as keys to establishing “radical trust”
and inclusivity.
The California Library Association Board of Directors will be
Spartan strong with San José State University alumnae and a
student winning seats in the 2019 CLA elections that were held on
October 4, 2019. Jayanti Addleman, Brandy Buenafe, Jeanette
Contreras, and Mayra Fuentes will take office on Saturday,
October 26, 2019, and be honored at the annual CLA conference in
Pasadena.
Emerald Publishing’s 26th Annual Literati Awards
recognized articles authored by two San José State University
professors and one alumna: Michelle
Chen, associate professor at the School of
Information; Patricia
Franks, professor at the School of Information; and
Emily Coyne, graduate of the School of Information’s Master of Library and
Information Science program.

The School of Information at San José State
University is pleased to announce that Deana Uribe, Master
of Library and Information Science student, has won a
Graduate Equity Fellowship award from the university.
Three librarians from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Library at San José State University have been appointed to
help students and faculty members of the SJSU School of
Information navigate and access information through library
resources and online. Craig Simpson, Gareth Scott and DeeAnn Tran
assume the library liaison
role from Ann Agee who held the position for the past five
years.
Dr. Michael Stephens, associate professor at the San
José State University School of Information, was invited to serve
on the advisory board of a recently funded Institute of
Museum and Library Services Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian
Program project: Training
Future Librarians for Civic Engagement and City
Collaboration. The project focuses on civic technology,
an emerging set of practices in using information, and communica
