San José State University School of Information has awarded
scholarships to 27 incoming and continuing students for spring
2020, totaling $38,394, to assist them as they pursue graduate
degrees. Each award is valued at $1,422.
San José State University alumna Maria Papanastassiou, who
completed her Master of Library and
Information Science degree in 2013, is the latest SJSU
Spartan to win the I Love My Librarian Award, conferred annually
by the American Library Association. The Kids’ World Assistant
Manager at Arlington Heights (Ill.) Memorial Library,
Papanastassiou was one of 10 winners announced on December 10,
2019, which included three academic, three public, and four
school librarians.
The 18th issue of the fully student-run Student
Research Journal is now available
online. Featuring an invited contribution from Assistant
Professor Deborah Hicks and articles written by current students
and recent graduates representing three distinguished
universities, the San José State University School of
Information’s research publication explores a vast array of
topics.
Julius
C. Jefferson, Jr., section head of research and library
services at the Library of Congress, will deliver the convocation
speech to students graduating from the San José State University
School of Information. The virtual
graduation celebration will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2020,
at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
Library professionals, employers, graduate students, and
educators gathered online at three Library 2.0 web conferences
during 2019. The conferences series, offered through a
partnership between Dr.
Choosing between an essay or a visual submission when considering
her application format for the 2019 Julia C. Blixrud Scholarship,
Madelynn Dickerson decided to write an essay. Her decision proved
successful in exhibiting evidence of her creative thinking and
passion for research libraries. The San José State University
School of Information graduate student received the $1,000
scholarship and was invited to attend the Association of Research
Libraries Fall Forum, themed “Research Libraries as Catalytic
Leaders in a Society in Constant Flux.”
Highlighting a rigorous debate in YA
librarianship, the newly published second edition of Transforming Young Adult Services incorporates
recent developments in critical youth studies by
Anthony Bernier, author, editor and professor at San José
State University’s School of Information.
The heart shape embodies the many works of Michael Stephens,
associate professor in the School of Information at San José
State University. Stephens has published a collection of columns,
blog posts, and essays that celebrates compassion and empathy,
teaches ways to develop and empower kindness, and encourages
curiosity and creativity as keys to establishing “radical trust”
and inclusivity.
The California Library Association Board of Directors will be
Spartan strong with San José State University alumnae and a
student winning seats in the 2019 CLA elections that were held on
October 4, 2019. Jayanti Addleman, Brandy Buenafe, Jeanette
Contreras, and Mayra Fuentes will take office on Saturday,
October 26, 2019, and be honored at the annual CLA conference in
Pasadena.
Emerald Publishing’s 26th Annual Literati Awards
recognized articles authored by two San José State University
professors and one alumna: Michelle
Chen, associate professor at the School of
Information; Patricia
Franks, professor at the School of Information; and
Emily Coyne, graduate of the School of Information’s Master of Library and
Information Science program.
