Graduate students enrolled in one of the newest electives offered in the iSchool’s Master of Library and Information Science program took their newfound problem-solving skills to Guatemala to address real-world issues.
The results from the 2015 American Library Association (ALA) election are in, and iSchool Director Sandra Hirsh was elected to serve a three-year term as International Relations Round Table (IRRT) councilor at large to the ALA Council.

Tools, Skills, and Competencies is the theme for the Library 2.015 Worldwide Virtual Conference, the fifth annual event about the future of libraries in the digital age. The open online conference will take place on October 20, 2015.
The hard work has paid off for 18 continuing graduate students at the San José State University School of Information, who were recently awarded a total of $28,000 in scholarships.
Congratulations are due to SJSU School of Information student Heather Terrell for winning the 2015 LITA/Ex Libris Student Writing Award for her paper, “Reference Is Dead, Long Live Reference: Electronic Collections in the Digital Age.”
A number of speakers, events, and activities are planned in celebration of more than 500 students who are graduating from the School of Information at San José State University (SJSU). The spring 2015 graduation festivities recognize the achievements of students from all the school’s online educational programs: Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA), Teacher Librarian, Post-Master’s Certificate in Library and Information Science, and San José Gateway PhD.
Librarian, advocate, author, and leader are all words used to describe Patrick Sweeney and Patrick Sullivan, both alumni of the San José State University (SJSU) School of Information. Now, they have a new title of “Movers and Shakers.”
No one who knows Jill Bourne, library director for San José Public Library, was surprised to find out she had been named one of 100 Women of Influence for 2015 by the Silicon Valley Business Journal. Previously recognized by Library Journal as a 2009 Mover and Shaker, Bourne was also named a Top Innovator by the Urban Libraries Council in 2010.
As a leader in education technology, the School of Information at San José State University (SJSU) is perfectly positioned to help with the Social Work Education Enhancement Program (SWEEP) developed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in cooperation with SJSU to address the growing challenges facing the social welfare infrastructure in Vietnam.
The San José State University (SJSU) School of Information was well-represented at the recent Medical Library Association (MLA) conference. Lecturer Dr. Cheryl Dee was named an MLA Fellow, and alumna Jennifer Dinalo was awarded a Career Development Grant from the Medical Informatics Section (MIS) of the MLA.
