2021 iSchool Staff and Faculty Awards Highlight Outstanding Contributions
The San José State University School of Information conferred its 2021 slate of awards recognizing faculty and staff members for outstanding contributions on March 16 of this year. Candidates were nominated by fellow iSchool staff and faculty members and by self-nomination and selected by Interim Director Linda Main.

iSchool Student Publication Highlights Importance of Archives
The Fall/Winter 2020-2021 issue of Archeota, the publication of San José State University’s student chapter of the Society of American Archivists, is now online. The current issue marks the fifth anniversary of the semiannual publication; the first issue appeared in spring of 2015.
New Staff Members Support iSchool Students Behind the Scenes
Two new staff members joined the School of Information at San José State University at the beginning of the spring 2021 semester. Taryn Reiner started as student support specialist January 25, and Bethany Winslow arrived on February 8 as the new e-learning specialist. Winslow will take on Debbie Faires’ non-faculty responsibilities when Faires retires at the end of this semester.
Retiring Faculty Reflect on iSchool’s Embrace of New Technologies
Dr. Patricia Franks and Debbie Faires, both longtime faculty members of the School of Information at San José State University, will retire at the end of the spring 2021 semester. The two have spent a combined three and a half decades of their professional lives at SJSU, making significant contributions to the iSchool’s transition to 100% online learning.
Three iSchool Alumni Recognized for Outstanding Public Service with I Love My Librarian Award
On January 23 the American Library Association honored the 2021 winners of its prestigious I Love My Librarian award in a virtual ceremony that was part of the ALA’s entirely virtual Midwinter Meeting. Three of the 10 winners are alumni of the Master of Library and Information Science program at the San José State University School of Information.
Discussion Assignments Become Case Studies in iSchool Instructor’s New Book
Textbook Explores Contemporary Library Management Issues
Textbook and scholarly publisher Rowman and Littlefield will release Wayne Disher’s new book, Library Management Problems Today: Case Studies in March, 2021. Disher, an instructor at the San José State University School of Information, has edited a library management textbook that is unique in using fictionalized versions of real scenarios that have taken place at the library, in order to explore contemporary library management issues.
iSchool Instructor Nancy Friedland Lauded for Theatre Arts Librarianship

honored Nancy Friedland, an instructor at the San José State
University School of Information, with the Louis
Rachow Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding
commitment to performing arts librarianship. Friedland’s
achievement was celebrated on December 17, 2020, at the TLA’s
virtual membership meeting and awards event.

Student Research Journal’s 20th Issue Demonstrates Dedication to Excellence

The 20th issue of the fully student-run Student Research Journal is now available online. Featuring an invited contribution from a faculty member, an article written by a current student, and book reviews by recent graduates from the San José State University School of Information, the content of this issue offers a wide variety of topics to read during the remainder of winter break (and after!).
Virtual Conference Draws Record-Setting Attendance with Participants from 121 Countries
Global Participation Made for 'Fascinating Discussions'
The San José State University School of Information organized three Library 2.0 web conferences during 2020, the 10th year of the Library 2.0 Worldwide Virtual Conference series. Each of the mini-conferences focused on a specific topic addressed by experts in the information professions. The format included an opening keynote panel, concurrent crowd-sourced sessions, and a closing address. Held entirely online at no cost to participants, the 2020 conference series spanned 121 total countries with more than 5,000 registrants for each conference.
