Melissa Taylor, a recent graduate of the Master of Library and
Information Science program at the San José State
University School of Information, took a class in library
marketing during her final semester and used a
course assignment to market herself into a new job.
The San José State University School of Information conferred its
2021 slate of awards recognizing faculty and staff members for
outstanding contributions on March 16 of this year. Candidates
were nominated by fellow iSchool staff and faculty members and by
self-nomination and selected by Interim Director Linda Main.
An aspiring archivist, art librarian and library marketer are among the five new School of Information students who were awarded a coveted Director’s Scholarship for Excellence for the spring 2021 semester.
They report feeling ecstatic, relieved and joyful; both honored
and validated. Some turn reflective, while others report feeling
more motivated than ever to succeed. They text their parents, do
a celebratory dance and check the email announcement twice to
make sure it’s real.
The Fall/Winter 2020-2021 issue of Archeota,
the publication of San José State University’s student chapter of the
Society of American Archivists, is now online. The current
issue marks the fifth anniversary of the semiannual publication;
the first issue appeared in spring of 2015.
Two new staff members joined the School of
Information at San José State University at the beginning of
the spring 2021 semester. Taryn Reiner started as student support
specialist January 25, and Bethany Winslow arrived on February 8
as the new e-learning specialist. Winslow will take on Debbie
Faires’ non-faculty responsibilities when Faires retires at the
end of this semester.
Dr. Patricia Franks and Debbie Faires, both longtime faculty
members of the School of Information at San José
State University, will retire at the end of the spring 2021
semester. The two have spent a combined three and a half decades
of their professional lives at SJSU, making significant
contributions to the iSchool’s transition to 100% online
learning.
The School of Information at San José State University will
celebrate graduates of its fully online programs in a
virtual convocation
May 20, at 5 p.m. PDT. Debbie Faires and Dr. Patricia Franks, two
pillars of the iSchool faculty, both of whom are retiring at the
end of the spring semester, will deliver convocation addresses.
Attendees can expect rich reflections on the iSchool’s past and
inspiration for graduates entering the field.
On January 23 the American Library
Association honored the 2021 winners of its prestigious I
Love My Librarian award in a virtual ceremony that was part of
the ALA’s entirely virtual Midwinter Meeting. Three of the 10
winners are alumni of the Master of Library and
Information Science program at the San José State
University School of Information.
Textbook and scholarly publisher Rowman and Littlefield will
release Wayne Disher’s new book, Library Management Problems Today: Case Studies in
March, 2021. Disher, an instructor at the San José State
University School of Information, has edited a library management
textbook that is unique in using fictionalized versions of real
scenarios that have taken place at the library, in order to
explore contemporary library management issues.
The Theatre Library Association
honored Nancy Friedland, an instructor at the San José State
University School of Information, with the Louis
Rachow Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding
commitment to performing arts librarianship. Friedland’s
achievement was celebrated on December 17, 2020, at the TLA’s
virtual membership meeting and awards event.
Renée Torres and Alejandra Reyes, both in their final semester of the Master of Library and Information Science program at the San José State University School of Information and both members of the REFORMA Student and Alumni Group, were awarded professional development awards from the Network of the National Library of Medicine, Pacific Southwest Region.
