MLIS+ Mentored Library Fellowship
MLIS+ Mentored Library Fellowship for Success
Beginning Fall 2025
The all-new MLIS+ Mentored Library Fellowship for Success program at San José State University offers both in-person and virtual work experience fellowships for currently enrolled students in the School of Information’s Master of Library and Information Science program. This program is open to both Regular Session and Special Session MLIS students.
The innovative MLIS+ Fellowship program was developed in collaboration between the SJSU College of Information, Data and Society; the School of Information; and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library as a way to address the critical need for well-qualified, diverse library professionals.
Through an extended-length paid fellowship, MLIS students will gain the practical experience and mentorship necessary to thrive in their post-graduate careers. By immersing students in real-world library environments and providing them with mentorship, the MLIS+ Fellowship program will not only enhance their professional readiness but also bring fresh perspectives and skills to the libraries they serve.
Paid Work Experiences
The MLIS+ Fellowship program will offer longer-term, paid work experiences with structured mentorship, accessible to MLIS students, whether in-person or virtually. The program aims to equip students with the skills and experience necessary for successful careers in academic libraries while providing library organizations with access to a well-prepared pool of future professionals.
Fellows will gain valuable library work experience, which will make them more competitive in their job searches after graduation. They will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings under the mentorship of an experienced professional, who will enrich the student’s learning experience. The talented MLIS students will contribute to real-world library operations and infuse their host library with new energy and ideas.
