How to Apply — Open Classes

Thank you for your interest in taking a master’s-level course through the fully online Open Classes program at the SJSU School of Information! Enrollment is open three times a year: fall, spring and summer

The Open Classes program is offered via Special Session. We do not offer Open University classes via our Regular Session program. Elective courses are offered on a space available basis, and course selection will vary each session.

MLIS core courses are not available through the Open Classes program. MLIS and MARA core course prerequisites are not required in order to take an Open Classes elective. They become required when matriculating into one of our programs. INFM requestors must meet INFM Technology Competency requirements.

Before requesting a class, visit the State Authorization for Distance Education page to search for eligibility information for residents of the state where you reside.

Important Dates for Summer 2025

  • Sign-ups for Summer 2025 Open Classes registrations open Tentatively at 8 am Pacific on May 8, 2025 and will close on May 22nd, 2025 at 5pm Pacific. For best selection, complete the form as soon as the form opens and reply to us in a timely manner, as courses fill quickly. The community is only able to access the iSchool’s Open Classes through our official Open Classes web request process (and not through SJSU’s Open University program). 
  • Summer semester dates for MLIS and MARA courses are estimated to start on June 2, 2025 through August 8, 2025. See: our iSchool Schedules for the dates of INFM courses. Please check on the Schedule of Classes in the Notes column for the start and end dates of the variable unit classes (1 unit and 2 units), as they have different start and end dates through the session. These dates will be added later. Most classes are asynchronous, but take a close look at the class schedules for any classes with Mandatory Zoom class meetings. They will be indicated on the schedule as dates become known.

Open Classes Sign-up Form

Thank you for your interest in taking a master’s-level course through the Open Classes program at the San José State University School of Information. Please note enrollment is based on space availability and courses may be full. This is an interest list and does not guarantee enrollment. If there is availability, enrollment priority will be based on the date this form is submitted. Course fees are $541 (USD) per unit and are due within 21 days of registration for fall and spring, 15 days for summer ($592 per unit for INFM classes). Courses are 3 units unless specified.
