Digital Services and Emerging Technologies

Library services are increasingly migrating to the digital environment in both the building of collections and in patron interactions. This migration has encouraged the emergence of new LIS disciplines that have various titles such as digital librarianship or emerging technologies librarianship. Working in this environment requires technological skills and experience, an understanding of metadata, and an ability to create and manage digital content. There is a close relationship between the Digital Services and the Emerging Technologies pathways. The Digital Services pathway focuses on the technical and usability aspects of building digital platforms for users. The Emerging Technologies pathway focuses more on the user experience. Students might want to mix and match classes from both pathways.

All new students in the Post-Master’s Certificate program begin their studies by completing a one-unit course that introduces them to our school’s sophisticated online learning environment: INFO 203 Online Learning.

Certificate students may select a total of 15 units pulled from the Foundation and Recommended Courses in the Digital Services pathway and/or the Emerging Technologies pathway. You will have access to a wide range of offerings such as web design and programming (HTML 5 and CSS), several programming languages such as PHP, MySQL,JavaScript/jQuery,Python, APIs, web frameworks, Drupal, digital asset management, metadata, XML the hyperlinked library, web usability, user experience, cybersecurity, text/data mining, and more from which to choose.

If you wish, you may select (as one of your classes) INFO 294 Internships (place-based and virtual). Note: Certificate students can take only one internship for a maximum of 3 units.

Courses are regularly updated to ensure they include the most current content possible. When you are enrolled in a course, you’ll have access to the current syllabus for that course, before it begins. As a certificate program student, you are not required to meet prerequisites, but the instructors will expect you to keep up with the class.

After completing 16 units required in the Post-Master’s Certificate program, as a final step before earning their certificate, students demonstrate their mastery of the program’s student learning outcomes by:

1. Selecting a communication technology tool of their choice (e.g. screencast, blog)
2. Using the selected communication tool to briefly illustrate how their course work helped them master the Post-Master’s Certificate program’s overarching student learning outcomes, as follows:

• Demonstrate proficiency in identifying, using, and evaluating current and emerging information and communication technologies
• Use service concepts, principles, and techniques to connect individuals or groups with accurate, relevant, and appropriate information
