Post Masters Information Intermediation and Instruction
This career pathway involves helping users define and articulate their information needs and requires mastery of a wide range of information tools and retrieval techniques for answering users’ questions, as well as proficiency in evaluating and selecting information sources and services. Instructing users in the retrieval and evaluation of information is also central to this specialization. This pathway also involves designing tools to facilitate users’ access to information and tutorials to enhance their information literacy skills. All new students in the Post-Master’s Certificate program begin their studies by completing a one-unit course that introduces them to our school’s sophisticated online learning environment: INFO 203 Online Learning.
Students in the Information Intermediation and Instruction pathway complete a total of 15 units in elective classes from the following:
- INFO 210 Reference and Information Services
- INFO 220 Resources and Information Services in Professions and Disciplines. This course (220) is repeatable with different content up to 9 units. To see all 220 topics, select 220 from the drop-down menu, then topics.

- INFO 246 Information Technology Tools and Applications: Advanced (Section on Web 2.0)
- INFO 250 Design and Implementation of Instructional Strategies for Information Professionals: Non K-12

- INFO 281 Seminar in Contemporary Issues – Topics: Intercultural Communication; Indigenous Librarianship, Graphic Novels

- INFO 294 Internships (place-based and virtual). Note: Certificate students can take only one internship for a maximum of 3 units.

Courses are regularly updated to ensure they include the most current content possible. When you are enrolled in a course, you’ll have access to the current syllabus for that course, before it begins. As a certificate program student, you are not required to meet prerequisites, but the instructors will expect you to keep up with the class.
After completing 16 units required in the Post-Master’s Certificate program, as a final step before earning their certificate, students demonstrate their mastery of the program’s student learning outcomes by:
- Selecting a communication technology tool of their choice (e.g. screencast, blog)
- Using the communication technology tool to briefly illustrate how their course work helped them master the Post-Master’s Certificate program’s overarching student learning outcomes, as follows:
- Demonstrate proficiency in identifying, using, and evaluating current and emerging information and communication technologies
- Use service concepts, principles, and techniques to connect individuals or groups with accurate, relevant, and appropriate information
