CA Teacher Librarian Services Credential

Overview

California Teacher Librarian Services Credential Program
31 Units

The California Teacher Librarian Services Credential program at the San José State University School of Information prepares students for the next step in their teaching career as a school librarian.

This program is a second credential program for students in California, who must have a California Clear Professional Teaching Credential before applying for the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential. Students in other states do not need to pursue the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential.

Specialized Skills for K – 12 Careers

Graduates of the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential program at the SJSU School of Information will emerge with a specialization in the functions and skills necessary for employment in K – 12 schools including collaboration, technology leadership, and program administration. They will have completed the necessary requirements for a license in teacher librarianship for employment in the state of California. School librarians are teachers, librarians and instructional partners.

“I am thankful to have found a program that has assisted me in developing my potential to become a strong and effective teacher-librarian.” – Marianne Gatto-McCann

Credential + MLIS Degree

Students in the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential program can pursue both their California Teacher Librarian Services Credential and Master of Library and Information Science degree, expanding their employment opportunities at all types of libraries and other information centers! School librarianship is one of the exciting career pathways students can follow within the MLIS program, which is fully accredited by the American Library Association.

Approved Course Work

The California Teacher Librarian Services Credential program’s course work meets the requirements for the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential.

Non-California school library students are advised to identify the school librarianship licensing requirements in their state, which is typically an ALA-accredited MLIS degree plus teaching licensure (but this does vary by state). Please contact Jonathan Hunt for information on this possibility.

“I think that being at SJSU has made me more open minded about all the things technology is allowing us to do. I also enjoy having the freedom to work at my own pace in my own time. I think that has been really convenient and helpful as a working professional.”
